MY WEDDING DAY
The wedding day is a day many ladies fantasize about and I was one of those ladies. Before I met my husband, I even had an idea of the kind of wedding gown that would suit me, I day dreamed about a 7 tier cake, LOL and how glamorous my reception hall would look like. By the time we were engaged, I had started doing some research about the perfect wedding gown for me and the outfit of my bridal party. I looked up different event planners, the sort of wedding rings we would buy, the hair style I would make, the list was endless. I wanted a classy wedding!
We set a date for the wedding, unfortunately, I had just graduated from medical school without a job yet. My overseas husband to-be was to foot the bill and make my dream wedding come true. His income was just enough to cater for us; our parents were not millionaires either. The reality of the situation was that we couldn’t afford the glamorous wedding I had imagined. It was very disappointing to be honest. I remember my to-be husband telling me to choose between having a flamboyant wedding and then having to struggle and wallow in debt after the wedding or cutting our coats according to our cloth and then enjoying after. I chose the latter. It was a difficult choice sincerely, but it was a wise decision.
My Sweetheart was and is very logical and practical. He told me then, even though he had access to credit cards, he wouldn’t want us to run into debt to foot our wedding bill.
I had to cut down on my budget and we ordered only the things we could afford. So grateful to God for sending helpers our way! It was not easy for me but my Darling assured me of a beautiful 10 years anniversary celebration with a blank cheque! Can you imagine waiting for 10 years??? Hahaha… we are almost there J, I can’t wait! Anyway, we had our low budget wedding and I travelled to be with the love of my life for honey moon which we are still enjoying without owing anyone a cent!
Why am I sharing this? Your wedding day will come and go, your marriage is what is more important! If you can afford an extravagant wedding, go for it and make your dream wedding come true. If you cannot afford it, don’t go borrowing, running yourself into unnecessary debt which can put a strain on your marriage. Don’t spend all your savings on your wedding! There is so much more to spend money on after the wedding especially as a new couple.
Invite only the people you can cater for, don’t go over and beyond trying to please people, putting your finances in a mess. Realize that people will attend your wedding reception, feast their eyes on your dazzling decorations, talk about the event for some time and that’s it! You and your spouse will be left to dance to the music thereafter in your marriage. Hopefully it’s a good music you’re left with.
A word they say, is enough for the wise.
To all my friends and fans trusting God for a beautiful wedding, I pray God will bring to pass your heart desires in Jesus name.
